Trash in the Bronx:

Good all Bronx our home. The wonderous nature of New York City and possibly the world.  As one of the five boroughs of New York City, the Bronx truly is a spectacular place to behold. With it’s many wonders to see and great opportunities, the borough attracts many, and is home to many from different cultures and backgrounds making it one of the most diverse places ever.  Many admire its beauty and history will stop at nothing to step foot here. Well, yes, the Bronx is beautiful and is truly filled with many astonishing things, it is also quite the opposite of what many see it as and holds many issues many don’t think about. One major issue is trash and there’s a lot of it here.

As of today, the Bronx is regarded as the dirtiest borough in New York City. This is some- thing many don’t think about and turn a blinds eye to. As vibrant as the borough could be, many who come here for possibly the first time are shocked to see the trash filled streets, stench neighborhoods, and much more disturbing things they wouldn’t expect. As New Yorkers and residents of the Bronx, to see others react like this to our beloved borough with shock and utter disgust is sad and to be regarded as the dirtiest borough is even more depressing. This surely isn’t the reputation we want for our borough. But the sad truth is that we have no one to blame for this but us. Everyday New Yorkers are littering. From bottles and paper to food and drinks, all covers our streets. It has gotten to a point where many don’t care and have become accustomed to how stained their neighborhoods have become. Across the city there are 22,000 green trash cans still in place on every sidewalk. Yet, we still miss them, and our trash ends up on the floor. This is ridiculous and things need to change. It’s time for us to wake up and come to our senses. We all need to come together and come up with a solution because the Bronx is our home, and it is our job to take care of it.  We can’t keep fueling the fire that Is destroying our borough. As a community if we come together, we can bring about change that will truly benefit us all. All we must do is do our part and help the city.

As of today, the city is trying it’s best to help keep our streets clean and our neighborhoods healthy. New plans and goals are coming up and things are looking promising for the Bronx.  On feb,1, 2023 “New York City Mayor Eric Adams and New York City Department of Sanitation (DSNY) Commissioner Jessica Tisch announced a roadmap to implement the nation’s largest composting program”. This a big and leading step in the right direction as “This will be the first -ever specific plan and commitment to reach 100 percent coverage citywide, providing residents with simple, universal weekly collection of leaf and yard waste, food scraps, and food-soiled paper products.” Composting our waste is one great way to tackle this problem. By doing so, we could save money and resources trying to constantly burn our trash in landfills or throwing them onto boats with no idea where they’re heading. This will also reduce the risk of pollution in our environment. Composting will allow us to put our waste to good use as it can be used to help fertile and keep our soil clean benefiting our environment. Recyling can also help. If we recycle more in our communities instead of simply just throwing our trash everywhere, we will see major improvements. Just like composting, money and resources would be preserved. Our neighborhoods and environment would be healthier and cleaner. This could also be a great way to spread awareness on the issue and get more people involved in action. Little acts like this could really help make a difference if we all participate. The Bronx will become cleaner and better. As a result, all those disgust and sickening reactions from others will be no more, and people will have a more positive look on our borough.

The Bronx is a spectacular and beautiful place. It always was and will continue to be.  It is our job as New Yorkers to help preserve its beauty. By all of us coming together collectively and doing these simple things in our lives we will see how much of a difference it will make. We must take account that this place will be the home of our kids, our kid’s kids and future generations down the line. We don’t want to see our beloved borough just rote away. Let us do our part in keeping the Bronx and its wonderous nature and history intact. As New Yorkers we can do it; all we must do is know where our trash goes.
